Abstract

This article examines compound verbs in Kurdish, Kalhori dialect, relying on contemporary literary works. Researches show that due to the limitations of simple verbs in expressing different meanings, compound verbs fill this gap in the language; it means simple verbs are combined with different elements in the language, including nouns, adjectives, adverbs, prefixes, and…to make single combinations. These single combinations, which have verbal meanings, form an important part of the language. In this morphological research, one of Kurdish dialects called Kalhori was studied. The data were collected in a descriptive and library format. For doing so, Kurdish poetry books and native speaker speech recordings have been used. Then the data were matched and analyzed with important theories related to compound verbs. The results show that in Kalhori dialect, verbal combinations are sometimes endocentric and compositional and sometimes outside the composition itself and can be distinguished in the form of an exocentric and idiomatic term. Also investigation of the data indicates that in Kalhori, compound verbs can be of both forms of head- final and head- initial. Historically, surveys also show that Kurdish compound verbs, like Persian, have been expanding.
