Cognitive linguistics studies meaning in linguistic context and pays attention to the role of experience in its formation, and examines linguistic concepts based on the cognitive abilities of the mind. In this type of study, the meanings that speakers of a particular language attribute to concepts such as motor actions indicate their way of thinking and attitude towards that concept and the knowledge they have gained from it through experience. For this reason, the aim of the present study is to examine the polysemy of the verb “to fall” in Persian within the framework of cognitive semantics in order to determine different meanings and draw its semantic network. The research data was obtained using the Hamshahri corpus and then analyzed based on three theories: Conceptual Metaphor (Lakoff and Johnson, 1980), Conceptual Schemas (Johnson, 1987), and Principled Polysemy (Tyler and Evans, 2001, 2003). The results of examining and mapping the semantic network of the verb "to fall" show that this verb, in addition to its prototype meaning, has 15 marginal meanings, each of which is the result of highlighting a part of the semantic components of the conceptual schema of the verb "to fall". This indicates the breadth of the conceptual space of this verb in the minds of Persian speakers.
