This study investigates the passive construction in Harsini Laki within the framework of the Minimalist Program. The data for this research is derived from the linguistic intuition of one of the authors, who is a native speaker of Harsini Laki. Following Keenan (1985), we recognize the existence of both lexical and morphological passives in Harsini Laki. We demonstrate that this language variety lacks auxiliary verbs in passive constructions and that only transitive verbs can undergo passivization. Using Collins’ (2005) proposal, we present the Voice Phrase and Modal Participial Phrase and show that the nature of passivization in this language differs from that of English, particularly regarding the use of auxiliary verbs. Finally, we analyze the morphological passive in Laki using the general mechanisms of the Minimalist Program, incorporating the Voice Phrase. For deriving passive structures, we introduce a [-active] feature in the Voice head along with a passive morpheme as a specifier. Verbs enter the derivation with an unvalued Voice feature and move toward the Voice head to satisfy the unvalued feature and receive the passive morpheme. The surface subject also moves from the verb’s specifier position to the Tense Phrase specifier position to satisfy the Extended Projection Principle (EPP).
