One domain that mirrors societal and cultural changes is the evolution of personal naming practices. This study adopts a novel approach distinct from prior research by examining unique single-occurrence names in Boukan over the past four decades. Acknowledging the relationship between social transformations and the invention of new names, it aims to demonstrate how these changes have influenced the selection of unique names for children in Boukan from1983 to 2023 and to find an appropriate answer for these questions: 1. which language(s) dominate the unique names chosen by Boukani parents? 2. What gender-based differences emerge in unique name selection across decades? And 3. What social, political, and ethnic implications are revealed through these naming choices? Using civil registry data all single-occurrence unique names with a frequency of 1 per decade were extracted. Names were cross-checked to ensure they did not appear in preceding or subsequent decades (zero frequency in other decades) and were then tabulated in a custom-designed matrix by linguistic origin i.e. Kurdish, Persian, and Arabic and then their frequency patterns were analyzed against socio-political conditions. This study diverges from prior work on high-frequency names by focusing exclusively on unique single-occurrence names, offering unprecedented insights into cultural changes over these decades.
