This study explores the representation of gender oppositions in two Persian novels, The Vacancy of Saluch (Mahmoud Dowlatabadi, 1979) and Incompleteness (Zahra Abdi, 2016). The research employs a qualitative design and draws upon Critical Discourse Analysis within the framework of van Leeuwen’s Social Actor Theory. The units of analysis consist of sentences and paragraphs that construct gendered roles, identities, and actions. Using van Leeuwen’s conceptual categories—activation, passivation, attribution, and exclusion—the textual data were systematically extracted and coded in order to identify patterns of representation and the linguistic mechanisms through which gender hegemony is either reproduced or challenged.
The findings indicate that The Vacancy of Saluch reinforces traditional gender hegemony by relying heavily on strategies of passivation and exclusion, as well as normative propositional structures that limit female agency and stabilize patriarchal authority. In contrast, Incompleteness constructs a more confrontational and transformative discourse by activating female characters, reducing mechanisms of exclusion, and foregrounding women’s social and economic competencies as central to the narrative. This contrast highlights a broader shift in contemporary Persian fiction toward more complex and empowered representations of women.
Overall, the results offer valuable insights for critical readings of modern Persian literature and contribute to discourse-oriented approaches in gender studies. Future research is recommended to extend this inquiry through larger and more diverse corpora of contemporary works and to integrate mixed-method analyses in order to further trace evolving discursive configurations surrounding gender in Persian literary production
