Journey Metaphors in Iranian Economic Discourse
Abstract
The present study investigates travel metaphors in Iranian economic discourse. To this end, metaphorical expressions related to the conceptual domain of journey were examined in the economic discourse of six Persian-language domestic newspapers, namely Donya-ye Eqtesad, Jahan-e San’at, Samt, Movaajeh-e Eqtesadi, Eqtesad-e Melli, and Tejarat, over a five-month period from the beginning of Ordibehesht to the end of Shahrivar 1404. The data were analyzed within the frameworks of Conceptual Metaphor Theory (Lakoff & Johnson, 1980; Lakoff, 1993) and Image Schema Theory (Johnson, 1987). The findings indicate that the conceptual domain of journey is manifested in Persian economic discourse through five conceptual metaphors: “Economy as Traveler,” “Economic Processes as Paths,” “Economic Actions as Steps,” “Economic Conditions as Path Conditions,” and “Economic Problems as Obstacles.” All of these metaphors are rooted in the PATH image schema, while the force schema also contributes to the formation of the final metaphor. These metaphors enable economic journalists and analysts to evaluate the current situation, ongoing trends, existing obstacles and challenges, as well as the future outlook of the economy in either positive or negative terms. Keywords: conceptual metaphor, metaphorical conceptualization, economic discourse, image schema, journey metaphor
