This study investigates the lexical transfer of Central Kurdish (Sorani) nouns into Southern Kurdish, focusing on their phonological and morphological adaptation in the context of dialect contact. Adopting a descriptive-analytical approach, the study draws on a written and media-based linguistic corpus. The transferred nouns were analyzed morphologically in five groups: simple, derived, compound, verbal-noun, and plural nouns. The findings show that nouns constitute an important lexical category in the transfer process and that a substantial proportion of the transferred items retain their original morphological structure. The observed changes occur predominantly at the phonetic and phonological levels, including vowel-quality shifts, consonant substitutions, and final-consonant deletion. The prevalence of disyllabic and trisyllabic forms further indicates that these constitute the dominant syllabic patterns among the transferred nouns. Semantically, concrete nouns are less frequent and less diverse than abstract nouns, suggesting the extensive presence of social, cultural, and abstract concepts among the transferred items. Overall, the findings indicate that contact between Central Kurdish (Sorani) and Southern Kurdish varieties involves a dynamic process of lexical, phonological, and morphological transfer and adaptation, in which lexical borrowing, phonological adaptation, and partial retention of morphological structure occur simultaneously. However, the available evidence does not support conclusions about the independent and productive transfer of morphological patterns or syntactic change. This study contributes to a more precise understanding of lexical borrowing and adaptation in contact among Kurdish varieties.
